The Carlsson Family has traced its ancestry back to
approximately 1600 BC in Celtic Northwest Spain
(present day Galicia) and
then to Ireland. In the late 5th Century A.D.,
Carlsson ancestor, Fergus Mor Mac,
King of Ireland,
went to Scotland with his army to assist his
maternal grandfather Loarn, King of Dalriada
(Scotland), in overcoming his enemies, the Picts.
When King Loam died, Fergus Mor Mac was unanimously
elected King, and became the first absolute King of
all Scotland of the
Milesian Race
Between in the 5th and 6th Century A.D., members of the Irish
and Scottish Clans married into the
Merovingian
and
Carolingian Dynasties of the Frankish Empire
that includes modern day Germany, Austria, France
and the Low Countries. Eventually the clans
married into English dynasties and became Lords,
holders of estates and other lesser functionaries
and merchants.
By
the late 1500's family members served King Henry
VIII at Court. However, under order of Elizabeth I, certain
key members spent time in Her Majesty's prison and
the Tower of London. Consequently, the family
decided it was time for a change and began the
immigration to the American Colonies via Holland on
the Mayflower.
In the 20th
century, the modern family is a blend of Swedish,
French, German,
Irish, Scottish and English (Welsh) in origin.
Ancestors have included kings, queens, clan chiefs, farmers, government
officials, craftsmen, bankers, jewelers, mercants, tailors, landed gentry, noblemen, knights,
soldiers, sailors, sheriffs, and religious zealots.
Names which might be familiar in early Colonial history include:
Tiffany, Comstock, Brewster,
Oldham
and others.
The older New
England family, the Picketts, arrived in the late
1590's and established early settlements in what was
to become the Plymouth Colony. The earliest
recorded family birth in the Colony was that of John
Pickett in 1605.
In 1620, the
Pilgrim Brewster clan came to Plymouth aboard the
Mayflower. Others followed in 1621 and 1623 on
the Fortune, Anne and Little James. They wrote
the Plymouth Compact, founded towns and universities
(Yale) and became
participants in the evolution of government, war and
religious development within the colonies.
By the late 1600's,
branches of the Carlsson ancestors were firmly
established in Virginia, Kentucky, the Carolinas,
Pennsylvania and in trading posts to the West.
Below are a few brief histories of various
ancestors. Some accounts were written by their
children or friends. Yet others were extracted
from their journals and the records of local
courthouses and churches.
